Define “busy”
Lately, every conversation I have with my Friends goes something like this:
“This week is insane.”
“I’m so slammed.”
“I literally have no time.”And then somehow… everyone is still available for a 4 pm matcha on a Tuesday.
I’ve started noticing that in Los Angeles, being “busy” means an entirely different thing than it would in any other city. It’s not back-to-back meetings in a corporate office or a packed commute or a strict 9 - 5. It’s kind of like how we say “no, yeah” to say definitely or “yeah, no” to say absolutely not. Busy here is a pilates class, 1 meeting, answering emails from your car, and a dinner that was supposed to be quick but somehow lasts 3 hours. It’s calendars that look full, but if you really examined them, half of it could be moved around. And often is.
Plans shift constantly. Everything is “let’s play it by ear.” People cancel, reschedule, push to next week, and no one really seems surprised by it. There’s this unspoken understanding that nothing is ever that locked in. It’s part of the effortless lifestyle — the fluidity that I love about LA.
And the funny part is that everyone still feels overwhelmed. Myself included!!
I don’t think anyone is lying. I think we actually do feel busy. But it’s a different kind of busy. It’s emotional, social, slightly self-imposed. It’s the kind of busy that comes from living in a city where your work, your social life, and your identity are all kind of blended together.
A coffee can be a meeting. A dinner can be networking. A walk can turn into content. Even resting somehow feels like something you should be optimizing.
Am I actually busy? Or am I just good at filling time?
Maybe being busy here isn’t about how much you have to do, it’s about how much your life overlaps.
I don’t think anyone in LA is lying about being busy.
I just think we’ve redefined what busy means.— Your Friend
