Dating is aging us
Don’t tell anyone, but I got my first grey hair.
I know I’m not in my early 20s anymore, but I didn’t expect to start seeing aging so… vividly. It was just there, staring back at me in the mirror. I had just gotten back from Italy. Drinking on the beach, going out at night, ignoring Slacks from my team because I really “needed this” break. Just living life, “summering” if you will. And then I got home, and there it was.
Obviously, I went into denial. It’s small. It’s probably from that stupid shampoo my dermatologist prescribed. Or from when I used to get highlights. Honestly, I think it’s blonde (I have brown hair).
Am I really starting to come face to face with aging? In Los Angeles, of all places?
Immediately, I get on a strict routine. We are living in the wellness capital of the world, after all. Only drinking on weekends. Walking an hour every day. 8.5 hours of sleep. Reading at night. No fried food. A few vitamins from Erewhon for good measure… this will fix it.
And then I find another one. On the other side of my head. At this point, it’s clearly not me. Something else is going on.
Did one of my ex situationships cast a spell on me with an Etsy witch? And then it hit me. It’s not the shampoo. It’s not the bleach. It’s not even aging.
It’s men!
No one really tells you this, but modern dating actually does something to your body. The inconsistency, the unclear intentions, the emotional ups and downs, it keeps your nervous system on edge. You don’t fully relax. Your body keeps score, even when you’re not.
Apparently, difficult relationships can literally speed up biological aging.
One study found that each stressful person in your life can increase your rate of aging by about 1.5%, or roughly NINE MONTHS.So no, it’s not the shampoo. Or the bleach. Or the drinking. It’s the men! Duh. I want those months back. So if you’re looking for advice, I don’t really have much. Other than maybe… stop entertaining people who stress you out like it’s a hobby. Your nervous system, and apparently your hair, will thank you.
